ANTI-HARASSMENT AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION

At the Encuentro por los Animales (EXA), we oppose all forms of harassment based on ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, appearance, disability, religion, immigration status and/or marital status.

If we are informed that any member, facilitator, sponsor, attendee, speaker, exhibitor, scholarship holder, volunteer or organizer has engaged in inappropriate behaviour during the event that causes insecurity for others present, we reserve the right to take appropriate action.

  1. As an attendee, speaker, exhibitor, grantee, or volunteer of Encuentro por los Animales (EXA), you commit to treating others with respect and to being part of a safe and inclusive community. In our internal and external communication, we promote the use of inclusive language and the correct use of pronouns with whom each person identifies.
  2. Anyone attending the Encuentro por los Animales (EXA) who believes they have witnessed or been subjected to harassment or discrimination should report it immediately to the general organization.
  3. If it is reported to us or discovered that anyone has engaged in harassing, threatening, inappropriate or unsafe behaviour during the event, the organizers reserve the right to take reasonable and necessary action.
  4. We respect all people and do NOT refer to others in a classist, racist, colorist, or sexist way. If a comment is made, we talk about it because we know we are learning.
  5. We are very careful when referring to other movements. We do not discredit other struggles; we inform ourselves before making criticisms and comparisons because we know that all oppressions occur and develop in a given context, time, and population.
  6. No policy can fully enumerate all forms of harassment, so ongoing training and education must be a priority. Any allegations of harassment, discrimination or retaliation occurring during EXA will be investigated immediately. The investigation may include individual interviews with the parties involved and, when necessary, with individuals who have witnessed the alleged conduct or who may have or have knowledge of the conduct. After the investigation, both the person who filed the complaint and any individual accused of harassment or discrimination will be notified of the outcome of the investigation, including any disciplinary or administrative action to be taken.
  7. Any other cases occurring during the event not covered by this harassment and discrimination policy will be addressed accordingly.

Disclaimer
  1. The Encuentro por los Animales (EXA) is a non-profit organization created to train and connect activists originating and residing in any country in Latin America and the Caribbean, who carry out anti-speciesist actions, for animal rights, as well as for the promotion of popular veganism and plant-based food. As such, both EXA and its organizers have autonomy in the ideological exercise of our values, objectives, mission and actions; which are independent from those of funders, sponsors, invited organizations, speakers, NGO representatives, exhibitors, attendees, event allies, scholarship holders, volunteers, etcetera.
  2. The Encuentro por los Animales (EXA) is not a summit created for the censorship or cancellation of people, organizations, associations, groups and activisms that do not practice veganism or antispeciesism as it is conceived and dictated by the positions and views of the global north. We consider that this conception is punitivist, white, colonial, racist, patriarchal, and distances us from being able to reconcile with the difference and to build from and with it.
  3. As EXA and as organizers, we recognize the existence of conflicts of interest that persist or may persist between our guests, attendees, speakers, exhibitors, scholarship holders, volunteers, sponsors, etc., and the participating organizations or funders.
  4. Derived from the above and various situations, EXA and its organizers sympathize with the activists who have experienced some kind of violence by some fellow activist, organization, member of the same or any other present or not in this edition. We state the reality of the oppression experienced and empathize with you and the affectations that, derived from this experience, are present today. Each case of conflict of interest that is brought to our attention will be reviewed in context, according to the organization's timeline and in accordance with our policy against harassment and discrimination.
  5. At Encuentro por los Animales we recognize that all forms of oppression are interconnected, intertwined and affect us at different levels. We oppose any approach that promotes a homogenous movement, with colonial discourses, and that ignores Latin American realities. We stand in solidarity with popular groups and activists, and reject violence both within and outside the anti-speciesist movement. We support their decision not to collaborate with organizations that have perpetuated or maintained structures of violence and discrimination against their workers or volunteers.
  6. Both Encuentro por los Animales and its organizers will prioritize the welfare of animal activists, especially those who work with their own resources; always aiming to be a space to dialogue, connect, learn, exchange knowledge, build from difference respectfully and create a strong community to work together for animal rights in Latin America and the Caribbean.
